It just hit me today how crazy it is that in the fashion world of wedding planning, most brides purchase their dress first, followed by the rest of their day-of accessories and jewelry, with one of the final shopping trips being the hunt for wedding bands with their beau. (Note: I did this when I was a bride.) Literally the only thing we definitely wear again after our Big Day is one of the last things we think about! Today we’re sharing the most important things we’ve learned through our own experience as well as our clients’ when it comes to considerations for choosing your perfect wedding rings.
Hint: Your choice should be about more than just being pretty.
Number one piece of advice?…Take your time. Taking the time to think purposefully about what will work best for you is always a good idea.
Like everything else when it comes to wedding planning, the first thing to do is set a budget, and stick to it. Personalized embellishments (like engraving a special quote or the date of your wedding into the band) cost extra, so factor that in upfront. We’ve read elsewhere that you should plan to spend about 3 percent of your total wedding budget on the rings, but really, talk it out and spend only what you’re comfortable with. If that ends up being 3 percent of the overall budget, great! If not, that’s great too!
Make sure you start your search early to give yourself plenty of time to find the best option within your agreed upon budget. Remember, a lot of jewelers don’t necessarily have your size of your selected ring in the store for you to walk out with that day. Even though I’m a standard ring size, the jeweler had to special order my band from Hawaii. The production and shipping took several weeks, so ring shopping is definitely not something we would have wanted to leave to the very last minute.
Do you work in a hustle bustle environment with a ton of machinery? Are you a fitness junkie? Are your hands your most important tools for getting messy work done (Shout out to surgeons, artisans, musicians, mechanics, and chefs!) Or are you someone who loses everything, even the pen in your hand? If you said yes to any of these questions, you might want to consider an unconventional option. Shawn went this route, so we know it well. In his day job, he works on a ship all day immersed in a world of machinery and tight spaces. And in his spare time, he loves to get into the gym to break a sweat. He has a stunner of a wedding band that he wears only for special occasions (and church!), but six days out of the week he wears a $15 functional silicone ring bought off of Amazon.
Your ring should speak to your heart. After all, you’re planning to wear it with every single outfit from your wedding day forward, from a casual Sunday trip to Target to your future child’s wedding, and every occasion in between. And not to be morbid, but one day you may even be buried with it on your finger. It’s likely the only material thing you will have for your entire lifetime, and as such, it should be a true reflection of what makes you “you”.
I love telling people the stories behind our rings — what drew us to them in the first place, and how they’ve impacted our lives every day since. Most importantly, they serve as a daily reminder of what really matters in the long game. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a bad day, seen my rings on my finger, and been reminded that there are much more important things in life to care about.
Okay, so the look of your ring is important, it’s just not the only thing to consider. While for some people, a more permanent wedding band is on their wish list (If you’re thinking about joining the tattoo rings club, check out these ideas on A Practical Wedding), others choose to opt for traditional jewelry. But that doesn’t mean the style has to be traditional! One thing we can all agree on. Your wedding band should be a reflection of your individual style.
If you are going to go all in on the wedding band hunt, look for something that you love the look of. You’ll know it when you see it, and it’s different for everyone. My wedding band is timeless and romantic, designed in rose gold to complement my engagement ring, and accented with tiny, delicate diamonds. Shawn’s is wild and fearless. Its decorative surface is covered in a bold display of blue sapphires and silver waves. A work of art! Looking back, I can tell you I’m really happy that we made sure our rings would say everything about who we are as individuals, rather than worrying about if they’d match each other side by side.
And that’s a wrap folks!
You now have everything you need to know to go forth with your fiance and enjoy a successful, FUN hunt in choosing your perfect wedding rings!
